Two baby girls, aged two and three respectively, were taken by cab to the Vacoas police station on Tuesday September 5 by a good Samaritan. The Good Samaritan was called by neighbors of the little girls, who were being abused by their alcoholic parents. The two sisters were starving, thirsty and wearing dirty clothes. They smelled bad and the diapers they wore were dirty. The two girls were taken into the care of an officer from the Child Development Unit (CDU) of the Ministry of Gender Equality before being admitted to the ward at Victoria Hospital, Candos.
In a complaint made to the Vacoas police station on the morning of Monday September 4, this CDU employee recounted the circumstances in which the two little sisters landed at the police station at around 11.30am on Monday September 4. The two baby girls were taken to the police station by a cab driver. The taxi driver was approached by the children’s neighbors, whose parents were squatting in a house on rue Couvent, Vacoas.
These neighbors could no longer remain insensitive to the abuse these children were suffering. The two sisters were handed over to the police of the Family Protection Brigade. After seeing the state the children were in, the CDU was alerted. The two babies were taken to Candos hospital for treatment before being admitted to the institution.
The parents of the two children, a 37-year-old bricklayer and his partner, the children’s 26-year-old mother, who works as a surface technician, are being actively sought by police officers from the Vacoas police station. Both have a penchant for the bottle.
