Unemployment Rate Decreased From 10.5% In Second Quarter 2021 To 8.1% In Second Quarter 2022

Very interesting figures concerning the labour force of Mauritius have just been published by Statistics Mauritius.

Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2021, the labour force has increased by 39,400. Employment increased by 48,900 while unemployment decreased by 9,500. The number of persons outside labour force declined by 34,500 during the same period. Compared to first quarter of 2022, labour force increased by 10,700 with a rise in employment (+13,000) and a fall in unemployment (-2,300). The number of persons outside labour force decreased by 7,800 during the same period.

From second quarter 2021 to second quarter 2022, employment increased by 48,900 to 515,500; male employment increased by 32,300 and female employment by 16,600.

Compared to first quarter 2022, employment increased by 13,000; both male and female employment increased by 4,000 and 9,000 respectively.

From second quarter 2021 to second quarter 2022, the number of unemployed persons decreased by 9,500. Male unemployment decreased by 6,100 and female unemployment by 3,400.

The unemployment rate decreased by 2.4 percentage points from 10.5% in second quarter 2021 to 8.1% in second quarter 2022. Male unemployment rate decreased by 2.6 percentage points to reach 6.6% and female unemployment went down by 2.3 percentage points to 10.2%.

From second quarter 2021 to second quarter 2022, the number of unemployed persons decreased by 9,500. Male unemployment decreased by 6,100 and female unemployment by 3,400.

The unemployment rate decreased by 2.4 percentage points from 10.5% in second quarter 2021 to 8.1% in second quarter 2022. Male unemployment rate decreased by 2.6 percentage points to reach 6.6% and female unemployment went down by 2.3 percentage points to 10.2%.

Characteristics of the unemployed as at second quarter 2022:

  1. The main characteristics of the unemployed as at second quarter 2022 were as follows:
  2. The 45,300 unemployed comprised 22,200 males (49%) and 23,100 females (51%).
  3. Around 28,300 (62%) of the unemployed were single; males (77%) and females (49%).
  4. Some 24,100 (53%) of the unemployed did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent and among them 6,600 had not even passed the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC)/Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) or equivalent.
  5. Around 30,100 (66%) had been looking for work for up to one year and the remaining 15,200 (34%) for more than one
  6. About 28,100 (62%) had working experience and 17,200 (38%) were looking for a first
  7. Around 13,000 (29%) were registered at the Employment Service Information
  8. There were 8,800 (19%) young persons aged 16 to 24 years, not yet married and looking for a first job. Some 4,400 possessed a qualification below
  9. Some 5,100 or 11% of the unemployed were heads of households.
  10. Around 11,800 (26%) lived in households with no employed
