The black series continues on our roads. In less than 24 hours, two young motorcyclists and a cab driver have been killed in road accidents. At 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday March 19, the death toll on our roads had risen to twenty-nine. The latest victim is a 49-year-old cab driver. Sanjay Kumar Ramchurn lost control of his car on the Route Royale in Clémencia, hit a tree and ended up against a wall. Constable Ally Akbar Beekarry, 25, assigned to the Emergency Response Service (ERS) of the Metropolitan Police South Division, was mowed down by a car in Montée S, Grande Rivière Nord-Ouest (GRNO). On the evening of Monday March 18, Muhammad Israfil Tariq Tagaully, 18, who was out for a motorcycle ride with a group of friends, was killed in a fall on the Ring Road in Pailles.
At around 7.30pm on the evening of Tuesday March 19, a car went off the road on the Route Royale in Clémencia, colliding head-on with a tree before crashing into a wall. The seriously injured driver, who lives in the village, was rushed to the Dr Bruno Cheong hospital in Flacq. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries en route. The victim’s body was subsequently transferred to the morgue of the Dr A.G.Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis, for an autopsy. The autopsy is scheduled for this Wednesday morning, March 20.
At around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening, March 19, Constable Ally Beekarry was mowed down by a car on the Montée S road in Grande Rivière Nord-Ouest (GRNO). He was killed instantly. An ambulance from the Service d’Aide Médicale d’Urgence (Samu) was dispatched to the scene. The doctor on board certified his death. The driver of the car was taken to La Tour Koenig police station, Pointe aux Sables, for questioning. She was given an alcohol test, which proved negative.
On the evening of Monday March 18, at around 11.30pm, a serious accident occurred on the Ring Road, Pailles. The accident was fatal for Tariq Tagaully, who was out for a motorcycle ride with a group of friends, heading for the Swami Vivekananda convention center. At one point, the handlebars of a Pulsar motorcycle being ridden by one of his friends, an 18-year-old from Terre Rouge, became entangled with those of his motorcycle, also a Pulsar. The two youngsters lost control of their two-wheeled machines and ended up on the asphalt. Seriously injured, Tariq Tagaully, who lives on rue Gorah Issac, Plaine Verte, was taken to Dr Jeetoo Hospital by his friends. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries shortly afterwards. He had just turned 18 on Saturday, February 10.
In his statement given in the early hours of Tuesday morning, March 19, the Terre Rouge resident said that while some of his friends took the victim to hospital, others fled with the motorcycle he was riding. The Terre Rouge resident who was at Dr Jeetoo Hospital had to be transferred to North Hospital, as a hostile crowd wanted to attack him. He was given an alcohol test, which proved negative. He was admitted to the ward after receiving treatment.
A police investigation has been launched to shed light on the exact circumstances of these three accidents.
