The Taiwanese boat Ruey Chien Tsai 112 is the sixth boat that caught fire in the roadstead of Port-Louis and is currently in the region of Bain des Dames. A situation that worries the fishermen of the region.
The latter have asked the authorities to express their disagreement, because according to them these boats are harmful to the marine environment. Especially the Taiwanese trawler and its 65 tons of fuel oil still on board.
According to the trade unionist Judex Rampaul, who is also a resident of the region, since Thursday, August 26, the oil from the boat’s engine has begun to spread at sea.
“It is not normal that every time a boat is on fire, it is put either in Bain des Dames or on the reef of Pte aux Sables. The region has become a garbage can, which damages the marine life in the area,” said Judex Rampaul. Adding that the port authorities must be more reasonable.
The trade unionist also argues that the authorities must exercise greater surveillance on the boats that dock in the port. And be sure that these boats are equipped to deal with fires and other problems.
“We must not forget that the port houses structures for the storage of gasoline, gas and other products that can cause irreversible damage. The port authorities must take their responsibility seriously,” added Judex Rampaul.
The Taiwanese fishing boat, as a reminder, was the prey of flames Tuesday night. The fire did not cause any casualties. However the trawler was towed in the area of Bain des Dames, but the fire had not been completely controlled. The flames are still visible this Thursday, August 26, despite the efforts of firefighters.
