The widow of Soopramanien Kistnen is claiming damages of Rs 50 million from the former Minister of Commerce for the damage she suffered because he had registered her as his Constituency Clerk, without her knowledge, according to her.
The case was called before the Master and Registrar, Wendy Rangan, this morning. Yogida Sawmynaden’s solicitor, Preetam Lallah, said that his client’s defence was not ready because, in the meantime, two formal charges had been brought against his client by the Director of Public Prosecutions. He added that the criminal case would be heard on 7 August.
Mr Lallah therefore requested a postponement. Mr Pazhany Rangasamy, Simla Kistnen’s solicitor, strongly objected. He argued that the criminal case would have no impact on the current case, which is a civil trial.
However, the case was adjourned until 21 September. On that day, Yogida Sawmynaden will have to present her defence in court.
