In a statement issued today by the Office of the President of the Republic, His Excellency Prithvirajsing Roopun, has exercised his powers under Article 73 of the Constitution to appoint the Honourable Shakeel Ahmed Yousuf Abdul Razack Mohamed as Leader of the Opposition. He replaces Charles Gaëtan Xavier-Luc Duval, G.C.S.K., F.C.A., who resigned as Leader of the Opposition this afternoon. Following the resignation of Patrice Armance, Patrick Assirvaden has been chosen to be the new whip of the opposition. The MP for constituency No 15 has been appointed this Monday.
Xavier-Luc Duval met the President of the Republic at 3pm on Monday to submit his resignation as Leader of the Opposition. He announced on Sunday that he can no longer remain in this function. Likewise, Patrice Armance has resigned as Whip of the Opposition. It should be noted that the PMSD has only 4 MPs. The Labour Party which has 11 MPs.
