Seventy-Eight Year Old Man Reported Missing, Killed In Accident

Poosparan Ramessur, 78, also known as Dagwat, an Alzheimer’s patient who was reported missing at the St. Pierre police station since the morning of Thursday, September 23, was found dead in an abandoned field in St. Andre Morcellement on the morning of Sunday, September 26. The police investigation conducted at the police station of Plaine des Papayes allowed after a tight interrogation to proceed to the arrest of Bhye Shehzad Ellahebox, a 35-year-old helper and resident of the village. The 30-year-old had to tell investigators that he was panicked after running over the 70-year-old in his car. He said he dragged the body to an abandoned field nearby in a cane field. The suspect was kept in police custody after his appearance in the Pamplemousses court during the day on Monday, September 27.

Initially this driver went to his home after being involved in this accident. Shortly after, he went to the police station to report the accident. However, a team of police officers who accompanied him to the scene did not see any victims.

The autopsy performed on the body of Poosparan Ramessur early Sunday evening, September 26, by Dr. Ananda Sunnassee, Police Medical Officer at the mortuary of the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port Louis attributed the death to multiple injuries. This after one of his sons living in Rose-Hill identified him.  The septuagenarian was reported missing by another son where he resided at Route EDC, Dagotière.

It was shortly after 7 o’clock on Sunday morning, September 26, following a request that a team of police officers led by Sergeant Gokhool went to the abandoned land where the body of this man was lying. The septuagenarian who was barefoot, had wounds on his face. The man’s body was later taken to the morgue of Dr. Jeetoo Hospital.

Bhye Shehzad Ellahebox was quick to confess that he hit the man on the Royal Road in St. Andrew’s at about 5:20 am on Sunday, September 26. This accident, he said, occurred not far from the DAV college. Panic-stricken after hitting the man at the wheel of his Toyota, he said he entered a side road to the right before stopping near a cane field. After stopping, he said he saw the victim still hanging on the rear windshield of his vehicle.

Shehzad Ellahebox said he pulled Poosparan Ramessur by his clothes and dragged him to a vacant lot. He returned home and went to the police station in Plaine des Papayes. After his interrogation, he was arrested and placed in detention for the night at the Piton police station. This Monday, September 27, he was brought before the court of Pamplemousses.  Three provisional charges were brought against him, manslaughter, concealing a body and culpable omission.

Chief Inspector Toorabally is leading this investigation under the supervision of Assistant Superintendent of Police, Sunilduth Nucchedy.
