A raid by police officers from the Flying Squad of the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (Adsu) in Cité Richelieu, Petite Rivière, on the afternoon of Tuesday 5 December led to the discovery of around 20 plastic parcels containing 20.05 kilos of cannabis. The market value of the drugs is Rs 24,060,000. In the wake of this seizure, Sheik Amine E-Ibrahim, a 33-year-old occupant of the house, was arrested. He appeared in court in Bambous on Wednesday morning 6 December. He is facing a provisional charge of drug trafficking.
After hours of surveillance, the Flying Squad officers, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Vineshwar Bahadoor, arrived at the home of Sheik Amine E-Ibrahim at around 1pm on Tuesday 5 December. A search of his house and yard revealed twenty plastic bags containing a large quantity of cannabis. Adsu investigators suspect that the drugs came from Réunion Island.
Sheik Amine E-Ibrahim was taken to Adsu headquarters at the Casernes Centrales, along with the twenty or so plastic bags of cannabis as evidence.
An investigation has been launched to shed light on the source of the drugs and, above all, to trace them back to the person who ordered them. All indications are that this shipment is destined to drench the whole country and the suburbs of the capital even before the festive period.
