Navin Ramgoolam is to be retried before the Financial Crimes Division of the Intermediate Court, as per the decision of the Supreme Court. This new case has been called at the Intermediate Court this morning. However, it has not yet started because the former Prime Minister wants to challenge the Supreme Court’s decision. His application for leave to appeal to the Privy Council at the Supreme Court has been rejected, so he proceeded through a Special Leave. This morning, his lawyer, Mr Gavin Glover, explained that the status quo remains, i.e., a response from the Privy Council is still awaited. As a result, the Magistrate Darshini Gayan has adjourned the case to 24 April.
Mr Shawkat Oozeer, lawyer of former Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam has stated that the Privy Council has, through correspondence, confirmed that former Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam will file his appeal. This will be filed by April 4, 2023. This was statement was made before the Financial Crimes Division (FCD). The former head of government is contesting the retrial of his case.
