The crescent moon was visible this evening, Monday 11 March, in Mauritius. Ramadan will therefore begin today. Special prayers, known as Taraweeh, begin yesterday evening in mosques across the country.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is of great importance, as it is the holiest month for the Muslim community. It was during this sacred month that the Holy Koran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). A special night is observed during the last ten days of Ramadan, known as Lailatul-Qadr.
During Ramadan, the faithful observe the fast from dawn until sunset. They wake up early in the morning and eat a meal called “sehri”. After sunset, they break their fast, known as the “Iftar”.
This holy month lasts between 29 and 30 days. Eid Ul Fitr marks the end of Ramadan.
