A police sergeant was assaulted while on patrol at Debarcadère Street, Vieux Grand Port on Sunday evening, July 31. He was calling to order five individuals who were consuming alcoholic beverages in public and playing loud music, when he was manhandled by two of them. The latter had to run for their lives when another police officer intervened. With the help of the Emergency Response Service (ERS) police officers, one of these two men, Prakash Hauradhan, a 45-year-old bricklayer and resident of Vieux Grand-Port was arrested.
It was around 11:45 p.m. on Sunday, July 31, when these police officers on patrol stopped at Rue Débarcadère, Vieux Grand-Port. A police sergeant who was in a vehicle got out to inform five partygoers that they were committing offences of consuming alcoholic beverages in public and noise pollution. Two men ran up to him and began to struggle with him. The sergeant was knocked to the ground and one of his colleagues had to intervene. The two men then had to flee. With the help of the RHS police officers these five men were chased. One of them was apprehended. The latter is Prakash Hauradhan.
He was taken to the Vieux Grand Port police station for questioning and was then placed in a cell at the Mahébourg police station. The sergeant who felt pain in his left foot went to the hospital of Mahébourg to receive treatment. He was presented before the court of Mahébourg this Monday morning, August 1st. He is facing a provisional charge of assault on a police officer.
