Pfizer Vaccines Donation: This Underscores US – Mauritius Bilateral Relationship

Must Read

Mauritius received a second batch of 107,640 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine from the United States on Monday, November 15. This is the result of a close collaboration between the U.S. government, the Mauritian government and the COVAX facility. The vaccines were received at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport by the Director of Public Health of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Ashwamed Dinassing.

The United States is delivering on its promise to serve as an arsenal of vaccines for the world and has successfully donated and delivered more than 234 million COVID-19 vaccines to more than 100 countries so far. This donation builds on the 76,050 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID- 19 that arrived in Mauritius on September 23 bringing the total doses shared to 183,690.

“Safe and effective vaccines are the best way to control this pandemic. As Mauritius has seen a rise in COVID-19 cases the U.S. Government is proud to support their vaccination efforts. This donation underscores our strong bilateral relationship,” U.S. Embassy Chargée d’Affaires Judes E. DeBaere.

The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines will help support the Mauritian Government’s efforts to vaccinated adolescents.

In the same vein, the Director of Public Health informs that with this new batch of Pfizer vaccines, the Vaccination Committee and the High Level Committee will soon decide whether or not they will go with the vaccination of children. “The vaccination of children remains a priority for the authorities. Then, the other vaccines will be given to other categories of people and children in Rodrigues,” he said. The latter informs those other shipments of Pfizer are expected, 200 000 doses, in December.

Note that this second donation to Mauritius is part of the global efforts of the administration of President Joe Biden to fight against the pandemic of Covid-19.
