The results of the Council for Vocational and Legal Education examinations, which were held from 28 July to 9 August 2023, were announced on Wednesday 11 October.
Only 12 aspiring solicitors, 6 aspiring barristers and 2 aspiring notaries passed. In addition, three candidates who had been given a ‘resit’ for a paper will have to sit the exams again. These are one aspiring solicitor and two aspiring notaries.
The board of examiners for the solicitors was chaired by Judge Renuka Devi Dabee. Mary Jane Lau Yuk Poon and Patrick Kam Sing chaired the examination boards for solicitors and notaries respectively.
121 candidates took part in the examinations to become solicitors, 67 to become barristers and 30 to become notaries.
For the 2022 examinations, the examiners had pointed out several shortcomings after marking the papers for future lawyers, solicitors and notaries, in particular a lack of reasoning in legal analysis.
