After that the Supreme Court has upheld the appeal lodged by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) regarding the challenge to the acquittal of former Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam in the Safe Deposit Box case. Navin Ramgoolam’s lawyer said that they must read the pages of the judgment carefully. « My first reaction is that I do not agree with the legal conclusions of the Supreme Court. Nevertheless, we respect the judgment,” said Mr Gavin Glover. He added that the Ramgoolam camp “will appeal the judgment on the points of law advanced by the DPP”.
Navin Ramgoolam will face a retrial in the safe deposit box case. As a reminder, the trial he was facing was struck out in intermediate court in November 2019. In 2019, the magistrates had found in their judgment that the case did not hold water. The Director of Public Prosecutions had appealed against this judgment and today, Justices Iqbal Maghooa and Renuka Dabee have retained the 18 points made
