The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards was a lively night filled with nostalgia, and female pop sensations.
With Taylor Swift’s joyous award show dance techniques returning, Chappell Roan making her feisty VMA debut, Sabrina Carpenter seemingly making out with an extraterrestrial, and Katy Perry flying through the air while playing a medley of her greatest hits, the reigning ladies of the charts ruled the night.
Guys Lenny Kravitz performed a new rendition of his iconic hit song “Fly Away,” among other songs, while Eminem opened the show with performances of “Houdini” and “Somebody Save Me.”
Megan Thee Stallion, a Grammy-winning rapper, served as the host.
As Taylor Swift accepted the first prize of the evening, she paused to pay tribute to the victims of the September 11 tragedy of 2001. “I wanted to say that since I woke up in New York on September 11th, 23 years ago, I’ve just been thinking about everyone who lost a loved one. The most significant aspect of today is everyone that we lost. And that is the foundation for everything that occurs tonight,” she stated.
Swift won seven accolades, including the top two: video and artist of the year. She has surpassed Beyoncé as the biggest winner of the event with 30 MTV trophies.
Swift’s smash song “Fortnight,” which is taken from her most recent album “The Tortured Poets Department,” won best collaboration for her and Post Malone. They also won the final prize of the night—the video of the year, which was directed by Swift.
Perry performed a career-spanning medley that included singles like I Kissed A Girl, Dark Horse, and Firework before winning the Video Vanguard award, which is MTV’s version of a lifetime achievement honor. When Roan won best new artist last year, she dedicated her award to “all the drag queens who inspired me” and performed to crowds of 200 people.
