The new centenarian, Miss Emmanuel, celebrates her birthday in Roche-Bois. Miss Marie Gisèle Emmanuel, born on July 31, 1922, celebrated her 100th birthday on Sunday, July 31, at her home in Roche Bois.
A ceremony was organized by the Ministry of Social Security to honor the new centenarian to mark this great occasion.
It was at her home in Roche-Bois that the event was held. In addition to family members, the Minister of Social Security, Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo, the nuns of the Mother Theresa Retirement Home were also present at this celebration.
During her speech, the minister congratulated Marie Gisèle Emmanuel for joining the very select club of centenarians of the country. Taking this opportunity, she listed a series of measures introduced by the present government to improve the quality of life of our seniors. She cited among others the increase of social benefits, subsidies for the purchase of glasses.
Thereafter, the new centenarian received from the authorities a shower of gifts including two checks totaling the sum of Rs 31,836, a bouquet of flowers, a medal and a certificate of centenarian.
Marie Gisele Emmanuel was born on July 31, 1922 in Church Street, Port Louis. Her father worked as a messenger for the Port Louis Municipality and her mother was a housewife. She was educated up to Standard 6. To support her family, she began working at the age of 12 in a wine factory. She retired at the age of 60.
The Roche-Bois resident has no major health problems and walks with the support of a cane. She recovered from surgery recently due to a fracture on her thigh. However, since 2015, she was admitted to the Mother Theresa Retirement Home by one of her relatives because there was no one to look after her.
Very charismatic, Gisele Emmanuel attributes her longevity to a good diet and her faith in God.
