Kashish Mudhoo, an 18-year-old lifeguard, was arrested late Monday afternoon, February 13, after a 3-year-old French child was found alone in the main pool of the Club Med hotel in Pointe aux Canonniers. For almost 5 minutes, the child was struggling in the water while the lifeguard was in the shade at some distance from the pool. Another child, who was swimming nearby, attracted the attention of the lifeguard. The boy, who is admitted to the City Clinic in Plaine-Verte, is in critical condition. Kashish Mudhoo, who lives in Arsenal, was brought before the court of Pamplemousses this Tuesday morning, February 14, under a provisional charge of guilty omission.
It was around 4:40 pm on Monday, February 13, that this French boy, who was in trouble in the main pool of the hotel, was rescued by Kashish Mudhoo after being alerted by another child. The latter, who was swimming not far away, ran to the rescuer to get his attention. Kashish Mudhoo jumped into the water to retrieve the child. As soon as the alert was given, an ambulance from the Emergency Medical Service was called. The child was rushed to the North Hospital. After receiving treatment, he was transferred to the City Clinic in Plaine-Verte.
Afterwards, a team of police officers went to this hotel and with the permission of the management of this establishment, they viewed the images of the surveillance cameras. The victim was seen in trouble in this pool for 4 minutes and 33 seconds before the lifeguard reacted after being called by a child.
The 3-year-old boy, whose condition is considered critical, was admitted to a room in the City Clinic’s intensive care unit. In shock, the parents have not yet given their statements. They are at their son’s bedside, and are taking steps to have their son evacuated to Reunion Island as soon as possible.
An investigation has been opened at the police station of Pointe aux Canonniers to shed light on the circumstances in which this child found himself in this pool without supervision.
