Grand Bay Resident Arrested On Four Theft Charges

Noorezamir Shamshoodeen, a 24-year-old resident of Grand Bay, took a sum of Rs 310,100 during four thefts of articles and money, including three burglaries on the North Shore since February 2022.

Under close interrogation, this suspect was quick to confess his guilt to the men of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Grand Bay. This Wednesday, March 23, he was brought before the court of Pamplemousses before being returned to the police cell.

Noorezamir Shamshoodeen was apprehended by the men of Inspectors Thakoor and Ganga of the CID of Grand-Baie and the Field Intelligence Office respectively during an operation that took place on Tuesday, March 22. This exercise was under the supervision of Superintendent of Police, Kapildave Mussafeer and Assistant Superintendent of Police, Riaz Juman of the Divisional CID.

A 29-year-old French consultant, who was on vacation in Mauritius from February 7 to 22, reported a case of theft at the Pointe aux Canonniers police station. He reported the theft of his bag in the public square of Mont Choisy on February 12 between 4:30 and 5:30 pm. His bag contained a sum of Rs 1000, an Apple Iphone, whose value is 820 euros, or Rs 32 800.

As for the three burglaries, Noorezamir Shamshoodeen had taken 23 cartons of cigarettes of different brands, 10 other packs of cigarettes, 200 phone cards, a sum of Rs 25 000 in denominations and Rs 10 000 in coins from a store in Plaine des Roches. The whole is worth Rs 90 000.

In another store on the Coastal road of Grand-Baie, he had stolen several packs of cigarettes worth Rs 75 000 and a sum of Rs 42 000. To commit his crime, he had broken a glass panel of this store. The loot taken is Rs 117 000.

Between March 16 and 19, he had forced the metal curtain of a restaurant in Grand-Baie to get hold of several bottles of alcoholic beverages. The total value of the goods is Rs 70,300.

Noorezamir Shamshoodeen is known to the police. On Sunday, October 11, 2020, he had been arrested along with his concubine, Bibi Shaheen Runjeet on a provisional charge of murdering 27-year-old Sheiroze Nathudkhan. The man, who is Noorezamir Shamshoodeen’s cousin, was stabbed in the abdomen on Saturday, October 10 in Grand Bay and died the next day. Noorezamir Shamshoodeen is on parole in relation to this case while Shaheen Runjeet, who took responsibility for the fatal stabbing, remains in custody.
