A suspicious car was intercepted at the Cocoterie road traffic circle, Roche-Bois on the evening of Monday July 10. The driver, Jean Amerie Manan, a 22-year-old goat breeder, was subjected to a body search. However, in a backpack in his possession, police officers from the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (Adsu) of the Quartier-Général (QG) at the Casernes Centrales found a sum of Rs 532,300 in various denominations. Jean Amerie Manan, who lives in Cité La Cure, was arrested on provisional charges of money laundering.
It was around 7.45pm on the evening of Monday July 10 that this Adsu team led by sergeant Pokiri intercepted a white Kia car at the traffic circle on route Cocoterie, Roche-Bois. The vehicle was stopped before police officers searched the driver. No compromising items were found on his person. In a backpack in his possession, the sum of Rs 532,300 tied with rubber bands was found.
Adsu suspects that this money may have come from illicit activities. Jean Amerie Manan was taken to Adsu HQ, along with his car. The police also seized a cell phone from his possession. When questioned, the young man told the investigators that the money had been given to him by an individual to be handed over to another person.
Jean Amerie Manan was placed in a cell at the Piton detention center on the orders of the Assistant Superintendent of Police, Sooresh Ramburuth. On Tuesday morning, July 11, he was brought before the Port-Louis court on a provisional charge of money laundering. He was subsequently taken back into custody.
