Soodesh Callichurn, the Minister reviewed the performance of the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Commerce in a press conference this morning. He welcomed the fall in the unemployment rate, predicted that it will fall further in 2023 and promised that the GM will promote the employment of Mauritians. He mentioned that the hotel sector is facing a lack of manpower. Soodesh Callichurn indicated that despite the pressure to recruit foreigners, the government will favour the employment of Mauritians.
Soodesh Callichurn also announced that he has asked the National Remuneration Board to review the wages and conditions of work in the hotel industry as well as the other sectors that are struggling to recruit… He also mentioned a drop in the unemployment rate from 10.4% in 2020 to 8.1% this year before adding that this tendency will continue in 2023.
