Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated next Thursday, September 01. This festival marks the birth of Ganesha, the God of wisdom. The festivities begin 10 days before the final ritual with the installation of the statue of Ganesha, usually made of clay, in the house and the finale is marked by the immersion of the statue in the rivers and sea of the country after a long procession through the streets. Final prayers and mantra chanting are performed at sunset. The statue is then immersed in the water with all due respect. This ritual symbolises the departure of Ganesha on his journey to his home, taking with him the misfortunes of all men. In Mauritius, this festival is celebrated mainly by the Marathi community.
