The Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity and the National Empowerment Foundation (NEF) organised a One Fun Day Activity, on Saturday 13 August 2022, at Mont Choisy beach. The event targeted some 450 children, aged between eight to 16 years old, who are registered under the Social Register of Mauritius from different regions around the country.
The Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo, and other personalities were present at the event.
This activity was organised with the aim of preventing and protecting the youth from the social ills of the society and exposing children to otherness through a diversity of experiences, outside the familiarity of home and school environments, which help them grow and eventually being empowered.
It is recalled that recreational activities play an essential role in the healthy development of children. However, poverty makes it more difficult for families to support healthy childhood development which includes leisure and recreation activities.
As such, the One Fun Day Activity was an opportunity for children under the Social Register of Mauritius to positively socialise with peers; improve their communication skills; develop appropriate behaviour; as well as enhance their self-esteem, self-confidence, and autonomy.
They were thus able to experience activities like all other Mauritians of their age since low-income households are less likely to participate in recreation and sport activities than individuals from higher-income homes due to the fact that recreational activities are sometimes too costly.
