A police operation led this morning to the arrest of Virarajen Naidu, 27. The latter, a resident of Mapou, fled when he saw the police. He was quickly caught. A search of his house led to the seizure of various objects, namely counterfeit of Rs 200 notes. Questioned, he quickly confessed that he makes fake banknotes which he spread among drug dealers, vegetable sellers and even while travelling by bus. He also gave up the name of an accomplice, who is actively sought. During this festive period, there are many counterfeit banknotes in circulation. Police has registered several complaints. One emanates from a 45-year-old employee of the National Transport Company. He explained that two men took a seat in the bus and handed him a Rs 1,000 note yesterday. He noticed some discrepancies and went to talk to the driver about what to do next. But, the two men got off the bus at Pamplemousses and fled. A 64-year-old pensioner also filed a complaint at the Plaines des Papayes police station. She said she gave a Rs 200 note to the greengrocer, but the greengrocer told her that it was a fake note. The complainant handed over the note to the police.
