A Teacher Swindled On A Facebook Page While Trying To Rent A Villa

A 40-year-old teacher from Rose-Hill was swindled of Rs 65,300 when she wanted to rent a villa in Tamarin, after visiting a page on Facebook.  It is with her family, fourteen people that she intended to spend the New Year in this villa. The forty-year-old woman filed a complaint at the Rose-Hill police station on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 29.

The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Rose-Hill was seized of this case to trace the author of this scam. In her deposition, Rose Hillienne explained that she was aware of a page on Facebook concerning the rental of villas and rooms in hotels with pictures. It was Tuesday, December 21. The same day she said she contacted this company on Messenger. She was asked to deal with a person on Whatsapp.

She then asked for a reservation for fourteen people in a villa in Tamarin for the period from 1 to 3 January 2022. The amount for these two days was fixed at Rs 65,300. She was asked to make a payment of Rs 30,000 as deposit. On Wednesday, December 22, she made this bank transfer. On the day of the Christmas party, Saturday, December 25, she was asked to make the payment for the remaining amount, i.e. Rs 35,300. She proposed to this person to make the payment in cash, but she refused. She proposed that the money be sent to her through a mobile application on an account number.

It was agreed that after the full payment was made, she would receive vouchers to be presented upon arrival at this villa. She waited in vain until Tuesday, December 28. She called the villa directly and was told that there were no reservations for her. The teacher then wanted to go to this Facebook page, but it was not found. She quickly realized that she was scammed.
