Our fellow Muslims are completing this month of 29 days of fasting. The moon was sighted this Tuesday evening at 5.50pm, so this Tuesday is the 1st Shawaal, 10th month of the 1443 Hijri calendar. A team from the Jummah Mosque was stationed at Chapman Hill in Coromandel to wait for the moon to appear and thus, fulfill this Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
This Tuesday 03 May, after 29 days of fasting and multiple sacrifices, Muslims in Mauritius will celebrate Eid Ul Fitr. The special prayers of the festival, the ‘Salaat Ul Eid’. are held in mosques across the island between 07:00 and 08:15, depending on the region. Please see below for the schedule.
Preparations for this Monday
Preparations have begun on Monday with shopping for the festival. Our report starts at the Pagoda street in Port Louis where we feel the preparations despite the uncertainty that reigned. Shopkeepers and shoppers alike were busy getting all the food stuffs and spices and alongside fulfilling traditions, such as the purchase of new clothes and henna application on the roads. The faithful gathered at the mosque for the last Iftaar of the year 1443 Hijri.
The unmissable Briyani
It is mentioned in the Qurʾān “Eat and drink with happiness because of what you were doing” (Qurʾān 52: 19). This means that the reward of fasting is that one will enjoy endless buffets and sumptuous meals in the Hereafter. After prayer, the greetings of Eid Mubaarak are a must. Most Muslims focus on gifts-giving and family gatherings, as well as the distribution of sweets. The family meal is marked in Mauritius by the inevitable Briyani.
Le Matinal wishes all its readers a joyous Eid Mubaarak.
