Issa Asgarally will launch on September 2 the collection ‘Écrire, peindre peut-être?’ The proceeds of the book, gathering different authors and visual artists, will be used to finance a stele in memory of the oil spill caused by the bulk carrier Wakashio in 2020.
A duty of memory. This is what is ‘Écrire, peindre peut-être?’ a collection published by Éditions de l’Océan Indien.
Initiated by the author Issa Asgarally, this book was inspired by the ecological disaster of Wakashio to write and paint: “In the world in which we live, one event always chases another. With Jean-Marie Le Clézio – winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2008 – we wondered what artists could do to make people remember this sad event. That’s when I had the idea of bringing together both authors and visual artists for this project. All of them drew their inspiration from near and far on this disaster to put their feelings into the material.”
In addition, the proceeds from the sale of the book will be used to finance a stele in memory of the oil spill: “All proceeds will be used to finance a stele that will most likely be placed at Pointe d’Esny,” says Issa.
Among the authors we find names like: Jean-Marie Le Clézio, Ananda Devi, Davina Ittoo, Catherine Boudet, Carl de Souza, Amarnath Hosany, Daniel Labonne, Aqiil Gopee and Laurent Dubourg.
The illustrations come from the following artists: Alix Le Juge, Khalid Nazroo, Pierre Argo, Rishi Jogoo, Krishna Luchoomun, Said Hossanee, Pascal Lagesse, Florent Beusse, Nirmal Hurry, Neermala Luckeenarain, Sultana Haukim, Audrey Pallany.
As a reminder, the launch will take place on Thursday, September 2 at 6pm at the Hennessy Park Hotel. The preface is by Sudhir Hazareesingh and the introduction by Issa Asgarally.
