An Emergency Protection Order (EPO) was made in the Port-Louis court for the Child Development Unit (CDU) of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare to obtain custody of a twenty-day-old infant whose drug-addicted and HIV-positive mother said she was unable to fulfill her responsibility as a mother.
This case was brought to the attention of the police in a statement made this Monday, September 13 at the police station of Baie des Dames. This one was made by a Family Welfare and Protection Officer of the CDU in the late afternoon of Monday, September 13. She explained that the mother gave birth to a boy on August 25, 2021 at the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis.
The woman confided in her that she is on methadone treatment and that she is also an intravenous drug addict. Because she has not been on prenatal treatment and is HIV positive, she said she was unable to care for her baby.
This is how an EPO was lodged in front of the court of Port-Louis. In the meantime a police investigation was initiated.
