On February 5, bass-baritone Avishsing Ramdhany won the Performing MOZART Grand Competition in the adult category. At 26 years old, he will soon fly to Germany in the hope of obtaining a sub-licence in classical music.
He has been singing since he was 8 years old. But it was only at the age of 19 that this resident of Daruty – Petit Raffray, discovered classical music: “It was my meeting with Véronique Zuel that made me want to start classical music. I have been taking singing lessons with her for four years now.
In order to evaluate his level, the young singer took part in the Great Performing MOZART Competition organized by Immedia: “I went there and sang O Isis Und Osiris from the opera The Magic Flute. To give the best of myself, I followed an intensive coaching with Véronique for all the vocal technique part. Éva Pons helped me to improve my diction in German. I take this opportunity to thank them both. Without them I would not have been able to win first place.
From now on, the young man is concentrating on his studies: “My application was accepted at the University of Music in Detmold, Germany. I will soon be going there to do a four-year undergraduate degree in classical music. After that I also plan to get my Bachelor’s degree, which will allow me to return to Mauritius and teach classical music there.”
