“Mo fek fer prizon mwa. Mo pa per gard”. These were the words of an individual aboard a United Bus Service (UBS) bus on the afternoon of Thursday November 2, after stabbing him in the left forearm.
It all began at around 2.30pm on Thursday November 2, when a UBS bus making the Curepipe-Port-louis route stopped at Bagatelle. An individual boarded the vehicle, which was being driven by a 55-year-old driver from Vallée des Prêtres. The man, wearing a black cap, was behaving violently when his fellow driver asked him to pay his fare, which he refused to do. The passenger began shouting and cursing at the ticket collector. He caused an uproar on board the bus, which inconvenienced the passengers. At a certain point, near the Grewals stop, as the tension intensified during his journey, the situation escalated. Arriving at Grewals, he stopped his vehicle and asked the man to get out. Without warning, he opened the driver’s cab and inflicted a violent stab wound to the driver’s left forearm before fleeing. Wounded, the driver went to AG Jeetoo hospital in Port-Louis for treatment with a form 58.
In his statement to the Pailles police station, the driver said he could identify his assailant. As a witness, he cited his fellow conductor, who was working on board the same vehicle. The area where the bus stopped is covered by Safe City surveillance cameras. The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the Metropolitan Police’s Southern Division is handling the case.
