The application of Arvin Boolell for an injunction to challenge his suspension will be called this Friday before Justice Shameem Hamuth-Laulloo. The Labour leader in Parliament went to the Supreme Court on Wednesday after he was once again suspended from the National Assembly on Tuesday. This follows comments he made against the Speaker on a private radio station. Through his lawyers, Dr Arvin Boolell filed an application for an injunction on Wednesday, seeking to freeze his suspension from Parliament, pending the decision of the Supreme Court.
However, Justice Shameem Hamuth-Laulloo, sitting in chambers, did not issue an interim order. Nevertheless, she has summoned to her chambers this Friday, 14 April at 10am, all parties concerned, namely Dr Arvin Boolell, Speaker Sooroojdev Phokeer, the Prime Minister and the Clerk of the National Assembly. The three protagonists will have to explain why such an order should not be issued.
In his affidavit, Arvin Boolell considers his suspension unjustified. He claims that the Speaker has exceeded his powers and, with the complicity of the Prime Minister, has violated the Constitution.
