Angelica Nanahary, the 20-year-old Malagasy national, provisionally accused of abandoning her newborn baby in the toilet of an Air Mauritius plane, remains in police custody. Following her appearance in court this week, the police formally objected to her release on bail.
Angelica Nanahary, the 20-year-old Malagasy woman who came to Mauritius to take up work in a factory, will spend the next few days in police custody after police discovered she had thrown her baby into the toilet of a plane from Madagascar. She appeared in court on Tuesday 25 January where a provisional charge of ‘abandoning a newly born child’ was brought against her. The police objected to her release and she was taken back to the police cell. She is due back in court today.
During questioning, she told police she did not know she was pregnant. The Criminal Investigation Division at the airport is taking her statement with a grain of salt. We will have to wait until the end of the investigation to find out what is going on. She may have concealed her pregnancy from the Malagasy immigration authorities because she was not allowed to travel to Mauritius in that condition. The young woman has a permit to work abroad. The baby is doing well.
