This is what Jayen Chellum denounced during the March 19 Rally in the streets of the Capital. Having been denied many times, this rally is symbolic on many levels. The rally was made possible by a March 18 ruling in favor of the Association des Consommateurs de l’Ile Maurice (ACIM) against the MPF.
Against the Government symbolically
This rally was intended to denounce the increase in fuel prices and the high cost of living. ACIM has been waiting impatiently since the fuel price hike at the end of last December for this march and in the meantime a second price hike has occurred. ACIM and the protesters believe that the government has tried to muzzle the association in its expression and denunciation. The protesters suggested that they “no longer believed in democracy” and that the rally was also “symbolically against the government,” arguing that “the ban was political,” according to Jayen Chellum.
Over taxation denounced
The general secretary has publicly made it clear that the ‘surcharge and over taxation on petroleum products’ will lead the consumer to misery in the face of a generalized increase. He called for the removal of these excess taxes. He announced an upcoming peaceful protest rally. The ACIM does not want the consumers to suffer anymore from the unjust impositions of the government.
Court’s new measured respected
As the basis of the objections of the Police, was the non-respect of the imposed conditions, the announcement was made that all the new conditions were obeyed to the letter, that is to say the discipline, the wearing of the mask, the physical distance of one meter, the limitation of 50 people as well as the exhibition of banners to be more easily identified. The cars following the procession also displayed flags since the beginning of the march at rue Madame.
