A 23-year-old Malagasy woman was arrested by members of Curepipe’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) on Thursday February 1 in connection with a case of burglary. During questioning, the police checked her passport and realized that the young woman had arrived in Mauritius as a tourist on October 30, 2023 and was due to leave the country on November 13, 2023. Questioned about her presence on Mauritian territory when her visa had expired, she told the police, “I don’t want to go back to Madagascar”. She was placed in a cell at the Midlands police station for a case of burglary.
Policewoman Azie from Curepipe CID arrested the Malagasy woman, who was living in a house on Route Royale in Belle Rose. She was taken to the CID office in Curepipe for questioning about a case of burglary. During her interrogation and passport check, the police officer discovered that her visa for Mauritius had expired in November last year. She told the policewoman, “I don’t want to go back to Madagascar”. The Malagasy woman remained silent when she was informed of her illegal stay in Mauritius.
In addition, a police operation to track down illegal foreigners in Mauritius was launched on Friday February 2 following the information received. Led by Sergeant Etwar of the Central Division’s Emergency Response Service (ERS), two Bangladeshi men were found in a house in Petit Camp, Phoenix. The two men, aged 39 and 42, have no fixed address. The Passport and Immigration Office confirmed that their work permits had expired. The two men were brought before the court before being placed in a cell at the Le Chaland detention center, until they are deported.
