A tragic accident occurred on the morning of Wednesday May 22 on the road to La Marie, Vacoas. Deokee Domun, aged 79, was crossing the road when he was hit by a truck. The septuagenarian, who lives in Glen Park, Vacoas, lost his life. This brings to fifty-four the number of deaths on our roads since the beginning of the year.
The pedestrian was crossing the road at around 11:15 on the morning of Wednesday May 22. La Marie, Vacoas was struck by a truck before it crossed over his body.
Police officers from the Vacoas police station were immediately alerted and rushed to the scene of the accident. At the same time, an ambulance from the Emergency Medical Service arrived on the scene to transport the victim to Candos hospital. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries en route.
Deokee Domun’s body was then taken to the Candos hospital morgue for an autopsy. The autopsy, carried out by Dr Maxwell Monvoisin, Principal Police Medica oficer, late on Wednesday afternoon, May 22, attributed the death to multiple injuries.
The truck driver, a 31-year-old Indian national working for a company, underwent a breathalyzer test, which came back negative.
The driver, who lives in Petit Camp, Valentina, Phoenix, was arrested and taken to the Vacoas police station. In his statement, he explains that the victim, who was crossing the road, collapsed in front of his vehicle. He then turned right to avoid her. He was charged with manslaughter.
