Amirah Dookun – 27 years old, has been practicing Kyokushinkai karate for 7 years. Black belt, 1st dan, this portlouisian lives her passion to the fullest. So much so, that she is 5 months pregnant and still attends the dojo.
Kyokushin is her whole life. Indeed, since she discovered this combat sport, she can no longer do without it: “My friend made me discover this discipline in 2014. At the beginning, it was not really easy. The training sessions were hard and we had to hang in there.”
But she held on. For good reason, she now holds a black belt and 1st dan. She owes this success to her husband: “My husband supports me a lot. It is thanks to his support that I was able to move up the ranks to become a black belt and obtain my first dan.
Expecting a happy event, Amirah finds it difficult to leave the dojo: “Being 5 months pregnant, I find it difficult not to go to the dojo. I always go there to help and to train as much as I can. Sure, some exercises are out of my reach at this stage of my pregnancy, but I still manage to train.”
After her pregnancy, she plans to continue her passion: “I would love to continue practicing Kyokushin and in the future why not open my own dojo to allow the ladies to defend themselves and to have a moment to themselves.”
