At 12:50 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, an individual bus driver was intoxicated while driving his vehicle. He was driving on the northern highway towards Port-Louis in the area near the chapel of Saint Antoine, when he hit a cyclist. The 65-year-old cyclist, who lives in the Roche-Bois area, was injured. He was taken to Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital where after receiving treatment, he was admitted to the ward. The 54 year old driver of this bus, living in Saint Joseph, Terre-Rouge, tested positive for alcohol. He had 140 micrograms of alcohol in his breath.
It was shortly before 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, that a police officer from the Trou-Fanfaron police station was dispatched to the North Highway, following a request for a traffic accident. A cyclist was injured after being struck by an individual bus. The cyclist was en route to a soccer practice.
The injured man was evacuated to Dr. Jeetoo Hospital in a police vehicle. After receiving treatment he was admitted to the ward. His damaged bicycle was taken to the Trou-Fanfaron police station. The driver of the bus was also taken to this location. He was given a breathalyzer test by a police officer from the Emergency Response Service. The test was positive. He had 140 micrograms of alcohol in his breath.
The driver was arrested and placed in a sobering cell at the Riviere du Rempart Police Station.
On the other hand, a 37 year old pedestrian, Jeff Kevin Cornet, resident of Mahadoo Morcellement, Baie du Tombeau who was seriously injured in a road accident on the evening of Friday, February 24, succumbed to his injuries at 2:30 am on Thursday, April 20. The victim was crossing the northern highway at Roche-Bois when he was hit by a motorcycle. The motorcycle was driven by a resident of Creve Coeur. This driver was also admitted to the Dr Jeetoo Hospital. Kevin Cornet was admitted to the neurological ward of the intensive care unit.
The autopsy performed on his body on the morning of Thursday April 20 by Dr. Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer, attributed his death to sepsis.
