The election petition filed by the three defeated MMM candidates in Constituency No. 1, Grande-Rivière-Nord-Ouest – Port-Louis Ouest, was called on Wednesday 19th January 2022 before judges Benjamin Marie Joseph and Mohana Naidoo. Mr Rajkumar Baungally, representing the Electoral Commissioner, Irfan Rahman, moved for an adjournment of the case. Irfan Rahman’s lawyer refused to allow his client to be cross-examined by Mr. Gavin Glover, who represents Arianne Navarre-Marie. The arguments on the necessity of questioning the electoral commissioner will take place next Friday.
The trial was due to be heard on merits from 19th to 21st January 2022. The three candidates elected from the constituency are Fabrice David (10,023 votes) of the National Alliance, Dorine Chuckowry (9,213 votes) of Alliance Morisien and Patrice Kursley Armance (9,199 votes) of the National Alliance. They are followed by Arianne Navarre- Marie (9,152 votes) and Veda Baloomoody (8,768 votes). As for Louis Giovanni Catherine, he finished in the seventh place with 8,503 votes.
