A delegation from the World Bank, led by Mrs. Pswarayi-Riddihough, Country Director for Mauritius, is currently on a mission to Rodrigues. Yesterday, they held important working meetings with the Chief Commissioner, Johnson Roussety, G.O.S.K, the Deputy Chief Commissioner, Franceau Grandcourt, as well as the other Commissioners of the Regional Assembly, to discuss several key issues such as the development of the airport at Plaine Corail, water security, food security, water for irrigation and infrastructure development in Rodrigues, among others.
As is known, in his speech on the 2023-2024 budget, the Chief Commissioner put the issue of the modernization of the regional airport of Plaine-Corail in the forefront. According to information from Rodrigues and Mauritius, it is on major developments could occur on this important project. Consultations with the World Bank to secure financing have reached a decisive turn. Thus, of the Rs 6.1 billion, the estimated cost for the construction of the new runway and other related airport infrastructure, the Ministry of Finance has submitted a loan application to the World Bank for an amount of Rs 5.7 billion, or US$ 124 million.
