The leaders of the PTr-MMM-PMSD alliance were at Pointe Canon on Thursday to mark the 189th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. After laying wreaths, they addressed their supporters. Xavier-Luc Duval, the Leader of the Opposition, said that it is a duty for every Mauritian to commemorate this event. He added that one should not forget that it was the slaves who built Mauritius. He alsi insisted on the cruelty they suffered. But, according to Xavier-Luc Duval, the legacy of the slave era lives on. He added that as a future government, it is the duty of the PTr-MMM-PMSD alliance to address them.
Paul Bérenger for his part, pointed out that the fight for freedom is not over… not only in Mauritius but also in many parts of the world. That is why, he added, history must be commemorated every 1 February and 2 November. On this special day, the leader of the Mauves said he had a special thought for the people of Gaza.
Dr Navin Ramgoolam recalled his contribution to the designation of Le Morne as a World Heritage Site. For him, Le Morne site symbolises the struggle of the slaves and represents resistance. The theme chosen by the opposition this year is “The fight for liberty never ends.”
