Nitish Jhugursingh, a member of the Port-Louis Racers AC, caused a surprise on Saturday in Gros Cailloux by winning the senior men’s race just ahead of the favourite Simon Desvaux De Marigny. In the senior girls’ race, Sonia Soodon, who was absent from the previous round, was untouchable.
Tactics paid off for Nitish Jhugursing. The 2021 national cross-country champion stayed in the wake of Simon Desvaux de Marigny before going on the offensive at the halfway point. But the hardest thing for the eventual winner was to lose his pursuer who offered great resistance.
However, Nitish Jhugursing had the answer and won by three seconds over his runner-up in a time of 21:31 over a distance of 6 km. Shyaveen Dussaram finished third in 21:59.
In the women’s main race, it was Sonia Soodon, who was absent from the third run, who dictated the course in 20:20 over 4.8 km. Sabrina Rabot (23:21) and Ashley Telvave (24:03) took the second place. Malika Ramasamwy took the lead in the U18 category in 21:38 for 4.8 km.
If five runners had achieved the pass of three last week but this time only two runners remained unbeaten. They are: Kelsy Leclerc (U12 girls) and Jean-Luc Vilbrim (masters men).
The last round of the cross-country league which also counts for the Mauritius championships will take place next Saturday, August 27, starting at 9:30am in Flic en Flac.
