The United States of America has revealed an additional $1.3 billion military package to support Ukraine in its air defence system. The US will provide Ukraine with anti-tank missiles, drones, and other equipment.
According to the Pentagon, the package consists of four National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) and their associated ammunition, 152 millimeter artillery rounds, mine-clearing tools, and drones.
In a statement, the Defense Department said, “Ukraine’s pressing requirements by committing critical near-term capabilities while also building the enduring capacity of Ukraine’s armed forces”, is a measure initiated by the US as part of the package.
According to a statement from the Pentagon, “This announcement represents the beginning of a contracting process to provide additional priority capabilities to Ukraine.”
Utilizing funding from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) program, President Joe Biden has the power to purchase weapons from the private sector rather than using American stockpiles.
Following a virtual meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group and its allies, the US Department of Defense confirmed the assistance. Allies are supporting Ukraine as its military wage a counteroffensive against Russian troops seizing Ukrainian territory.
