Two roller bags in which were hidden three parcels containing 5.71 kilos of cannabis were intercepted at the airport of Plaisance on the morning of Wednesday November 1. The owners of these bags, Mariam Khanam, 35 years old and Mohammed Zain, 34 years old were arrested. The market value of the seized drugs is Rs 3 042 600. The same day a controlled delivery operation was set up. This one allowed to arrest Mohammad Ziyad Ayoob, a 34 years old mechanic and resident of Bambous for having given a sum of Rs 10 000 to Mariam Khanam. The three suspects were brought before the court on Friday, November 5.
It is by the flight of EK 701 of Emirates Airline coming from Dubai that this Indian couple residing in Bangalore, India arrived in Mauritius around 10:45 am. After the roller bags that these Indians were carrying were examined, the policemen of the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (Adsu) of the airport, led by the chief inspector Pultoo and those of the Custom Anti Narcotics Section (Cans) of the Mauritius Revenue Authority had to discover three parcels containing 5.71 kilos of cannabis in the double bottom of these bags.
A controlled delivery operation was set up on the same day at around 12:23 pm. This exercise resulted in the apprehension of Ziyad Ayoob. The latter came to hand over a sum of Rs 10 000 to Mariam Khanam. This exercise was lifted during the day on Thursday, November 4.
Ziyab Ayoob was taken into custody at the Curepipe police station, while the two Indians are being held at the Vacoas detention center on the orders of the assistant superintendent of police, Rajendranath Jhurry. This man was suspected by Adsu of being involved in drug trafficking. A search made at his home gave nothing. It was then that the police had to go to an abandoned house in Trèfles where the suspect was growing cannabis.
This raid resulted in the discovery of forty-eight cannabis plants, twenty seeds of the same drug and a certain quantity of cannabis.
