Two Bangladeshi nationals have been actively sought by police since Friday morning, December 17. The two men, Khan MD Sumon and Anural MD, who were in Mauritius illegally, had been arrested and held at the Le Chaland detention center since November 6 and 7 respectively.
It was a police officer stationed at this center who reported the escape of these two foreigners at around 7.10 am on the morning of Friday December 15. In his statement given on the same day, he explained that he had started work at 5 p.m. on Thursday December 14 and finished at 8.30 a.m. the following morning.
On Friday morning, December 15, during an inspection of the detention center’s blocks, he noticed that the two Bangladeshis, Khan LD Sumon and Arunal MD, were no longer in block N0 2, which was locked. He also noted that the locks on this block had come loose.
He immediately sounded the alarm. A search party was organized with the help of National Coast Guard units from Le Chaland, Blue Bay and Mahebourg. Men from the Passport and Immigration Office, the Criminal Investigation Division, men from the Field Intelligence Office and police officers from the Plaine Magnien police station also took part in the search.
