Yet another fatal accident occurred on Tuesday evening, May 16, on the Trianon Expressway near the former Palladium nightclub. A car driving in the direction of Phoenix hit a pedestrian who crossed in front of his vehicle. The victim, Joseph Cornel Aimée, 71 years old and living on Route Royale Bambous died on the spot. His body was transported to the morgue of the Victoria Hospital in Candos for an autopsy. This is the 47th victim recorded on the road since the beginning of this year.
The accident occurred at about 8:00 pm on Tuesday evening, May 16. A 31 year old accountant, living in Castel, Phoenix was driving his Toyota car on the Trianon highway. Arriving at the old Palladium nightclub, while driving in the direction of Phoenix his car was to brutally collide with this septuagenarian who crossed in front of his vehicle. An ambulance of the Emergency Medical Service (Samu) was requested, the doctor on board had unfortunately to note the death of this pedestrian.
The driver of the car was taken to the Rose Hill Police Station where he was given a breathalyzer test. The test was negative. In his statement he explained the circumstances of the accident. He said he was unable to avoid the victim, even though he applied the brakes, because she crossed in front of his vehicle.
Joseph Aimée was reported missing at the police station of Bambous around midnight on Wednesday, May 17 by his son-in-law. The victim was identified at the Candos hospital morgue by his daughter. The daughter explained that her father was suffering from memory loss. In the late afternoon of Tuesday, May 16, she left the house and did not return. It was through the description of the victim and her clothing in Missing’s statement that Rose-Hill investigators called in her daughter for an identification.
Dr. Ananda Sunnassee, Police Medical Officer who performed the autopsy on the body of Joseph Aimée on Wednesday morning, May 17, attributed the death to multiple injuries.
Police are awaiting word from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) as to whether to bring the driver before the Rose-Hill court on a provisional charge of manslaughter.
