His visit to the North Pole is currently the pride of an entire nation. Originally from Grand Bay, Kumar Soodun set foot on the North Pole on August 27. The Mauritian intends to achieve another feat, this time to visit the South Pole.
It is his profession as a sports coach on board the icebreaker Le Commandant Charcot that allowed him to live this adventure: “In 2018, I worked on a cruise ship. When I was offered to try the polar adventure, I immediately accepted. It was more out of curiosity to discover something other than the sun and turquoise water of my native island.”
He has many memories, but nothing beats the feeling of being one of the few Mauritians to have walked on this snowy ground: “I am certainly not the first Mauritian to go there. It is still a unique experience and feeling. I feel extremely proud for my country and my village.
Back in the country on October 3, Kumar will be heading back to Antarctica soon: “The crossings are done by seasons. The next one will be in Antarctica. Who knows, I might even stop over at the South Pole this time.”
