The Queen’s Baton for the 2022 Commonwealth Games 2022, was welcomed this afternoon, during a ceremony, held at the Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) Mauritius/ Mauritius Olympic Committee in Trianon, Quatre Bornes.
The Baton was received by the Baton Manager of Mauritius, Mr Richard Papie, from the Baton Manager of CGA Mozambique. The President of the CGA Mauritius Mr Philippe Hao Thyn Voon, the British High Commissioner to Mauritius, Ms Charlotte Pierre, the Director of Sports, Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Mr Nagalingum Pillay Samoo, and members of the CGA Mauritius, were present.
Mr Papie thereafter handed over the Baton to the President of the CGA Mauritius who in turn presented it to the British High Commissioner. Ms Charlotte Pierre then handed the Baton over to the Director of Sports.
The Baton will be under the safe custody of the Police Sentry over the night at the CGA Mauritius at Trianon, Quatre Bornes.
In a statement, Mr Papie said that it is an honour for Mauritius to host the Queen’s Baton Relay over the next two days and that the Relay is a tradition established by the British Royal Family for the Commonwealth Games. He highlighted that the Relay will follow an itinerary across the country and will see the participation of several sportspersons who have competed in former editions of the Commonwealth Games. He reassured that all participants will have to abide by sanitary protocols in place due to the COVID-19.
Moreover, Mr Papie indicated that the official launching for the Queen’s Baton Relay scheduled for Saturday 27 November, will be held at the State House, Réduit, and will be effected by the President of Republic of Mauritius.
The Queen’s Baton Relay will then cover the following route: Réduit – Pointe Jerome Youth Centre – Mahebourg Waterfront – Naval Museum – CGA Mauritius/ Mauritius Olympic Committee at Trianon, Quatre Bornes – Government House/National Assembly – Port-Louis Immigration Square Central Bus Station – Central Post Office Museum Port-Louis – British Council, Rose-Hill – Metro Station Rose-Hill – Metro Station Quatre Bornes – La City Trianon – CGA Mauritius/ Mauritius Olympic Committee at Trianon, Quatre Bornes – SSR International Airport Plaine Magnien.
It is recalled that Birmingham 2022 is staging the 16th official Queen’s Baton Relay – an epic journey across the Commonwealth. The Queen’s Baton will be carried throughout all 72 nations and territories, reaching Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania, the Caribbean and the Americas.
The Relay began in October 2021, once Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had placed her message to the Commonwealth into the Baton.
The Baton will then travel for 294 days, connecting communities in every corner of the Commonwealth, embracing unique cultures and sharing stories. It is expected that this collective journey will ignite hope, solidarity and collaboration for the next generation.
