Elder Abuse: Bakery Owner Arrested

Must Read

A 71-year-old man was assaulted by the owner of a Phoenix bakery late Thursday afternoon, November 25, for raising the issue that one of the employees serving bread was not wearing a mask or gloves. The septuagenarian, who is chief investigator for a government agency, was then asked to leave the bakery.

As the old man returned to his car, the owner of the bakery tried to remove him by force from his car and take his ignition key. The owner of the bakery, Mohammed Shameer Fatehmamode, 31 years old, was arrested on a provisional charge of assault on an elderly person.

The septuagenarian, who lives in Curepipe, went to the Phoenix Police Station to report the incident. It was around 4:35 p.m. on Thursday, November 25, when he parked his car in the parking lot of the Loul Bakery, located on Royal Road in Phoenix, to buy bread. Inside, a man who was not wearing a mask or gloves was serving customers. He said he made a comment about it, but the person in question ignored him and simply made some comments right after.

At one point, the offended cashier asked the 70-year-old to leave. As he returned to his car, the cashier, who is also the owner of the bakery, came out of the bakery and attempted to forcibly remove him from his vehicle and take his ignition key. The victim went to the Phoenix Police Station to report the matter. A team of police officers accompanied him to the bakery where he identified his assailant. The septuagenarian was injured in the ankle.

The latter was arrested and placed in a cell at the detention center of Vacoas. This Friday, November 26, Mohammed Shameer Fatehmamode was brought before the Court of Curepipe on a provisional charge of elder abuse. He was subsequently released on bail.
