On Wednesday 23rd February 2022, the Labour Party is celebrating its 86th Anniversary.
For this occasion, the leader of the Labour Party, Dr Ramgoolam via his Facebook page, Ramgoolam Gen-Next, spoke about the accomplishments of the Party over the years, for instance, the right to vote for ALL, social benefits, pensions, among others. The leader of the Labour Party also commented on the situation of the country. Below is his message to the Nation;
My dear compatriots,
On this memorable day of 23rd February, we celebrate the 86th Anniversary of the Labour Party, the political party that shaped the modern Mauritius and has freed us all from the colonial yoke.
Our achievements are unalterable in historical, social and economic terms: the right to vote for ALL, social benefits, pensions for pensioners, widows, orphans and the disabled, social housing, free health system, free education, free transportation for students and the elderly, to mention just a few of our achievements.
The history of our country is forever linked to the history of the Labour Party. The Labour’s footprints are everywhere around us.
The Labour Party has had five leaders before me.
The latter fought body and soul against fierce adversity without ever bowing their backs.
In a few days, we will celebrate the 54th Anniversary of the Independence of our country but it is sad to see that everything that has been built stone after stone, with patience and perseverance, in unity, is being shattered.
Since the 2014 elections, we can only see a steady erosion of our values and principles. Scandals continue to pile up without ever heeding the criticism.
The appointments of relatives and or “roders bouttes” in government institutions and within parastatal bodies, all accompanied by mirobolant salaries, squandering the coffers of the state and flouting meritocracy day after day.
As for the witch hunt that has already cost the country billions, it seems to be experiencing no respite.
Public funds continue to be squandered while contracts worth hundreds of millions are allocated to people close to the regime in place.
The economic future therefore looks very bleak, with a rupee that depreciates visibly and inflation that continues to rise. The consequence of this disaster is the rise in prices, which is a real blow to the population.
As a result, social harmony is threatened while drugs spread to every corner of the country, wreaking havoc among young people. As a result, we live in growing insecurity and there is no longer a “Law and Order”.
Recently, a political agent of a government party was murdered because he was going to expose electoral fraud. The culprits are still running…
Nowadays, our democracy is unrecognizable. Parliament has become everyone’s laughing stock, because the rights of Opposition parliamentarians, and therefore of their constituents, are constantly violated. In other words, our august assembly has lost its splendor as well as its letters of nobility.
Mauritians no longer have confidence in the electoral process following the counting of votes in constituency no.19 where ballots disappeared as if by chance! This irregularity among others is a direct attack on the right of fellow citizens to vote, which is sacred in the context of a democracy. Today, this constitutionally guaranteed right is ridiculed and flouted.
When hundreds of our fellow citizens find themselves unable to exercise their right to vote because their names have been removed from the electoral register, the first victim is none other than democracy, and by extension, the people.
Vox populi vox dei.
Not a week goes by without money politics further weakening our democracy. The weak let themselves be tempted while the cowards have no trouble selling their soul and conscience to the highest bidder.
The implosion of the rule of law has sadly become a daily spectacle… every day our island, once paradise, slowly but surely slides into a hell from which a return seems unlikely, unless our people and especially the young decide to wake up and take their destinies in their hands; it’s never too late!
The experience I have gained allows me to see my country plunge into deep abysses and I know for a fact that it is vital to bring together those who want to save their homeland.
More than ever, it is time to make a real break with the past to ensure that our future generations never again suffer this daily assassination of our democracy.
This renewal also involves the restructuring of the PTR in order to prepare young people for the next generation. I named this process “GEN-NEXT”.
The population and young people mainly need to know that there is another way to get involved in politics. It’s not all baseness, defections and betrayals!
That is why I appeal to all our patriots and especially, to this youth full of dreams and ideals to put aside our differences. As the saying goes, “When the Sage shows us the moon, let’s not look at the finger…”
Rally around the Labour Party to free the country from the amateurism and autocracy that is gangrenous our foundations! Mauritians deserve better and want to finally live free and serene in a better Mauritius with equal chance for everyone!
-Long live the Labour Party.
-Long live the Republic of Mauritius.
