This scheme is not new. What has changed is the benchmark that has been revised for those eligible. The Development Bank of Mauritius, which used to offer the scheme to families with income up to Rs 30,000, will now offer this scheme to families with income up to Rs 50,000. Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth has inaugurated the registration day in St. Pierre on Saturday 11 June.

Anyone earning a salary of less than Rs 50,000 will get a subsidy of Rs 8,000 for the purchase of a tank and a water pump. This relaxation is part of the plan to enable a 24/7 provision of tap water to the population. “This initiative will enable households in areas affected by disrupted drinking water supply to get relief during the hours of disruption. This is an interim measure pending the completion of the infrastructure works of the CWA networks for a 24/7 water supply,” the PM said at the launch. He also stated that the government wants to take on various projects to improve the quality of life of all citizens, “and we are making great strides in our efforts to ensure the welfare of the people. We do not claim to be able to solve all the problems, but year after year, we are making improvements”. The PM invites those interested and in need to register. Beneficiaries can purchase a tank and a pump of their choice or even larger tanks.
