The celebration of the Ugadi festival at the Appadu of Ramdoo lane, Chemin-Grenier will remain forever as a bad memory. In the early hours of this Saturday, April 2, Sakuntala Devi Appadu, née Kusnamah, 61 years old also known as Nita, had been badly burned on her back and stomach while taking her bath when the gas shower flared up. The sixty-year-old succumbed to her burns late Saturday afternoon, April 16. The autopsy revealed that she died ӑ as a result of sepsis.
To welcome the New Year of Telugu, Sakuntala Appadu, had woken up happily to take her bath. This before preparing cakes, before going to the temple to then receive her children, daughters-in-law and grandchildren over breakfast. It was 5:30 a.m. that day, the sixty-year-old was taking her bath when suddenly sparks came out of the shower before flaming. She was burned on her back and stomach. Her husband and son, who heard an explosion, quickly ran to the bathroom.
Sankuntala Appadu was rushed to Souillac Hospital before being transferred to the Burns Unit of Victoria Hospital in Candos. She was admitted to a ward in the intensive care unit. She succumbed to her burns at approximately 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 16. The autopsy performed the same day at around 6:40 p.m. by Dr. Sudesh Kumar Gungadin, head of the forensic department of the police, attributed her death to sepsis.
An investigation was initiated at the level of the police station of Chemin-Grenier to shed light on the circumstances of this tragedy. Forensic technicians went to the scene to collect evidence, including the gas heater and the tank to help advance this investigation. The gas cylinder was located outside this bathroom.
Funeral services for Sakuntala Appadu were held on the morning of Sunday, April 17. She was cremated at Camp Gopal, Chemin-Grenier.
